How it all started...
Hog Swamp Baptist Church was constituted around 1844. Redden Britt and Cader Willoughby gave one acre of land to Hog Swamp Free Will Baptist Church. The land was given because of their love for the church and located on the East side of Hog Swamp.
We are not sure when the church changed from Free Will Baptist Church to Hog Swamp Missionary Baptist Church, but in 1873 Hog Swamp Baptist Church was a member of the Cape Fear Baptist Association which was composed of Baptist churches in many adjoining counties to Robeson, It was represented at the association on 1873 with a membership of 99 recorded.
In June of 1874 L.T. Britt and wife, Rebecca, and S.E. Britt and wife, Martha, gave two acres of land located on the East side of Hog Swamp facing the Wire Grass Road.
The church has occupied several buildings during its history. Little is known about the first building that was located to the west of the present building near the old cemetery. Robeson Association minutes recorded that a building was built in 1874. This was a one room wooden structure that soon proved insufficient for the large crowd that attended the church. A new house of worship was built in 1902 at an approximate cost of $1500.00. The wooden frame building was burned and another house of worship was built in 1936 that seated 150 people and this building stands today. Church minutes have recorded that the church embarked on the remodeling of the inside of the present building and in 1965 further remodeling was completed which includes the bricking up of the wooden structure and the audition of a baptistery. In 1975 additional classrooms and fellowship hall were added to the building. In the mid 1980’s the parking lot was repaved, new stained glass windows and new carpet installed, refinishing of the pews, renovation for additional classrooms, a new utility building, a new public address system and choir robes for the choir purchased. Additional renovations were completed in 2000-2001 which included new carpet installed, new light fixtures, pews were re-upholstered, and parking lot was repaved.
Hog Swamp Baptist Church has belonged to two Baptist Associations. It was a member of the Cape Fear Baptist Association until 1883 when Robeson Baptist Association was organized and it was a charter member of this organization.
Hog Swamp Baptist Church has been in some ways a “Mother Church” to other churches surrounding it. It was the second largest church in the association in 1897 with 270 members recorded. Long Branch Baptist Church, Oakton Baptist Church, Smyrna Baptist Church and Broadridge Baptist Church have all organized and Hog Swamp Baptist Church has contributed some members to each of the newly organized churches.
The earliest record of a Sunday School in the church was in 1891 with 74 members enrolled as of today there are 88 and we are still growing,
Over the years Hog Swamp Baptist Church has made cosmetic updates to the church. In May of 2021 we added a play ground.
We are excited to see what God has in store for us.
